IITNT was founded by the three amigos – Dr. Raj Menon, Mr. Samir Bhargava and Mr. Abhay Sawant. Dr Amit Shekhar was added as a the fourth board member by the founders.

An initial executive council was formed with representation from the 7 IIT campuses, including Roorkee which had just gained IIT status. This helped to bring all the alumni from various campuses together under the umbrella of IITNT.  It also helped to get the initial wave of membership which built up to almost 250 members by the time IITNT had its first conference in 2004. i2 office provided initial meeting place for the board and executive council to put a structure to the organization for planning and executing professional, networking and social activities.  Key focus was to engage the alumni for networking through monthly lunches (with speakers) and happy hours.  For families IITNT hosted picnics and diwali dinners.
